Gender, citizenship and inequalities

The Beijing Platform for Action and the CEDAW represent an important step in the affirmation of common values and of a shared opinion about gender equality for all human societies, regardless of their cultural and religious traditions. However, strong gender inequalities persist practically all over the world, as the four basic parameters -work, education, politics and health, which are used for the measurement of Gender Gap, the gender imbalance- indicate. The paper analyses the issue of gender equality versus persisting social and economic inequalities, taking into account an historical perspective, and focusing present problems. The paper raises a crucial question: is the persistence of sexism, discrimination, violence against women, the culmination of the resistances of religious institutions and conservative forces, undemocratic and authoritarian, or is it a consequence of the present World system, shaped by the dominating Western countries and their ideologies (namely market-centered ideologies) with their formal acceptation of democracy and of human rights?

Contributions of a gender perspective in the training of professors

This writing intends to critically reflect the experience lived in our work as trainers of trainers (also understood as preparation of teaching staff or educational qualification) in the Center of Social and Educational Research of the North Argentine (CISEN) in the Faculty of Humanities of the National University of Salta. It deals with one elaboration shared that puts in analysis the formative relations from the Gender perspective. The lived process between who they relate to this formative intentionality, assumes the conditions and forms of a group device. We left from not giving by known what is best for the other, who is in formation, knowingly that is part of a continuous one which never it finishes and of which we are part of. Such process is looked more like a deformation, an of-construction that to a new imposition. In individual, uncover gender oppressions, in its intersection with race, sexuality and class can become an analyzer of the domination relations. One is to interrogate our own formatives practices to interrupt the transmission of a violence that can continue exerted on women teachers

Leadership and corporate citizenship: What can we learn from woman leaders in the Andalusian Companies

This paper presents a study of business leadership in medium and large Andalusian companies with a gender focus. It is related with corporate responsibility practices, emphasizing ethics, social and political demands of the business world. This is part of the axis of Equal Opportunities in the work of the Equal Project, an initiative of the European Social Fund (2002-2007). Key concepts, research methodology: Both quantitative, using cuestionnaires, and qualitative, by interviewing, methods and results are defined. Quantitative data on the participation of women in the business, and the qualitative ones that show hotspots are presented: General skills and significant professional women managers and barriers to equality. The conclusions point to the need for a corporate culture change around social responsibility measures to advance equal opportunities, and with it the integration of skills and people in the world of work: the development of more effective and flexible forms of work organization, the Joint leadership and support services that make it possible to reconcile family and professional life as well as to reduce the wage gap between sexes, and support the abolition of the horizontal and vertical occupational segregation. Finally, guidelines for the training of people as citizens, and their relationship to corporate citizenship are suggested.

Gender equality in sport and its contribution to education for citizenship and democracy

This article is part of a larger research study conducted with secondary school students to explore thesocio-cultural mediation of families and schools in the identification and development of bodily-kinesthetic intelligence. More precisely, in this paper the relationship between sports practice and the development of social and civic competences from a feminist perspective is studied. Adopting a quantitative methodology (through a survey research method), 1138 students were surveyed. A purposive sampling method was employed. The results show that participation in sport among women is much lower than men’s. Mostly, women practice stereotypically female sports, which are less associative and organized. In line with this, women report having difficulty to access sports facilities. Another finding is that the practice of sports is associated with personality features relating to social and citizen development (perseverance, poise, leadership, etc.) and others indicators of sociability, such as solidarity and social participation

Education, gender and cultural diversity. Conviviality or Coexistence?

Cultural diversity is a characteristic of plural societies, the way we think that cultural diversity makes societies evolve or become tight, make cultural groups remain segregated or integrated. It is important to analyze the management model of cultural diversity guide our interventions because it determines which cultural groups remain isolated, integrated and even annihilated. This paper examines and defends the intercultural model inclusive and cohesive model, establishing principles and guidelines for intervention from this model. The gender has always been a factor of exclusion, being for immigrant women an element of discrimination. From an intercultural model is to guide measures and actions to intervene from a gender perspective, determining the need in society to form an intercultural coexistence to achieve integration of all people (immigrant and native). We are all aware of the importance of the struggle for respect for freedom of ideas and integration of differences as essential elements in human dignity, and culture and gender are elements of this process.

Security, protection and family norms: Gendered and selective regulations of marriage and migration in Italy and Portugal

This paper engages in a critical reflection on specific normative policies concerning migration and family in two contemporary European contexts. The analysis is based on fieldwork carried out in Portugal and Italy1, exploring the discourses and practices concerning the marriage of undocumented migrants in the context of the construction of “marriage of convenience” control policies. The underlying hypothesis is that the policing of mobility and intimate lives reproduces inequalities by intervening on the opportunities and constraints faced by some categories of migrants. Grounded in the literature exploring these mechanisms as part of broader processes of migrant inclusion and exclusion in the context of global human mobilities, the analysis problematizes both the criminalizing and victimizing perspectives on “undocumented migration”. On one side, the paper will discuss the problematic -and gendered- assumptions underpinning restrictive migratory policies. These include the invocation of “security” purposes, the protection of “vulnerable” groups, and the safeguard of national “family norms” in order to corroborate the restriction of migrant‟s rights. On the other side, the paper will give a brief overview of current laws, policies and institutional practices in the case studies, stemming from the preliminary qualitative analysis of empirical materials collected for the broader PhD project. These data indicate that rather than reaching their alleged goals, such restrictive migration control apparatuses potentially produce and reproduce the stratification of subjects along gender, socioeconomic and national origin lines.

Mobility, family, and gender: A transnational approach

Mobility in transnational spaces modifies the relationships between individuals and within families and households in both sending and host countries. The impacts of gender on individuals‟ behaviour essentially establish the long-term effects migration brings in their lives. In this paper, after presenting the theoretical grounding of the research group “transnational lives, mobility and gender” (TLM&G)2, I will discuss the epistemological implications and choices involved in the methods of data collection in transnational mobility studies. I will conclude pointing to the necessity of rethinking mobility and family studies in a transnational gendered perspective through the adaptation of methodological instruments to the reality of contemporary human mobility. The general aim of the TLM&G research group is to explore the impact of mobility on individuals‟ lives, considering family and household relationships, and taking into account how integration experiences are affected by gender representations and selfperceptions. From the academic point of view, this research group will reinforce the sociological approach and the scientific background in this area in European and African countries, with a potential impact on transnationalism, migration, and family studies. Looking at mobility as a human right and opportunity for individuals and families, the aim is to contribute to a renewed theoretical approach on the differentiated conditions pertaining to migration access in the origin society as well as a differentiated scope of social integration in the host society

Measures developed by the government to encourage retention in the education system and ensure access to the labor market on an equal footing

The present study is integrated within the project of research DER 2012-36755 "labour market, career transitions and age: young people and over 55 years of age", financed by the Secretariat of State for Research, Development and Innovation. Therein, it is left from the set of measures that the Government of Spain approved in March 2013 called 'Strategy 2013-2016 youth employment and entrepreneurship' which is part of the national reform plan presented by the Government in response to the European Union recommendations in the field of youth employment. Among the 100 proposals have been identified for our study a total of 30 irectly related to vocational training for the integration of young people into the labour market. Specifically, in this paper, an analysis of state regulation, Andalusian and ARGOS observatory on the m3 measure, which projects the permanence of students in the education system and ensure access to the labor market on equal terms is presented. Pretending to know also,
training and integration into the labor market in the Andalusian autonomous community from the gender point of view, as the situation of women in vocational training and the labor market has been taken as a case study. The main conclusion that vocational training has become much more egalitarian, as it has significantly matched the proportion of men and women who enrolled, but still a great professional branches segregation and gender

Women and leadership: Controversies in the educational field

On the road to political equality between men and women we stop at one of the variables that we consider essential: women's access to leadership and management positions in education and more specifically in the University. We try to focus on the barriers that have hindered the path to match statistics and, on the other hand, we seek to investigate the female leadership style considering it an added value for organizations in education to promote important social changes. Research in the field of educational organization, over the past decade, have made a progress in the search for good practices in management and leadership in educational contexts. At the same time, the studies try to go deeper in the difficulties for women for management. They also try to find if their leadership style affects school success, considering that in education the percentage of female teachers is very representative. Also these studies in recent years moved all these issues to the University field, trying to meet the problems of femaleUniversity professors to access management positions within a culture that is still very masculine today.

On the notion of citizenship. A Feminist Viewpoint on Genealogies, Tensions and Ambivalences

This paper aims to conceptualize the tensions in the notion of citizenship exploring its emancipatory contents and inquiring into its ambiguities, asking for its limits and for the reasons why, when we think about citizenship, we do it in the terms of the liberal tradition. Generally speaking, citizenship is conceived as if there was a break between the citizen and the real human being -marked by class, race, gender and sex. One of the ways to illuminate the meaning of citizenship is by searching into its historical genealogies as they enable the understanding that its nuances, restrictions and expansions are not only a matter of ideas, but the result of historical and social conditions, geographical determinations and political traditions. The trajectory proposed revisits, on the one hand, the Marxist interpretation of the abstract citizen under the light of current crossroads; and, on the other hand, it makes reference to the so-called Wollstonecraft dilemma
