Abstract

This study aims to explore the thematic as far as the consequences of conjugal violence on female victims are concerned, especially in the context of the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD in the context of conjugal violence has been a neglected area of research. In Portugal we have no knowledge of studies in this area. This was our main motivation for the present text. The main goals are the analysis of the relations between conjugal violence and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the personal net. This study was developed in a sample constituted by 63 women who had been victims of conjugal violence and who were sheltered by institutions aimed for those cases. The instruments used were the Evaluation Scale of the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the Social- Biographic Questionnaire. Our study is considered a non-experimental research which aims to empirically test the relationship between Domestic Violence and PTSD, and between social characteristics and PTSD. In this research design the target population is selected based on experiences we intend to analyze that have already occurred. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS statistical analysis program (Statistical Package for Social Sciences), version 16.0.
